Moving from Charlotte to Raleigh, NC

Raleigh is about 165 miles from Charlotte, which puts this move past North Carolina’s 35-mile line, so it is priced on the weight of your shipment and the distance rather than by the hour. Because both cities are in North Carolina, the state’s Utilities Commission rules still apply, not federal ones. Full-service moves on this route typically cost $819 to $3,268 for a studio or one-bedroom, $1,322 to $3,795 for two or three bedrooms, and $1,737 to $4,864 for four bedrooms or more. Most are finished in one to two days. Get a written estimate based on an inventory of your home, ask for a binding not-to-exceed price, choose your coverage before the move starts, and book four to eight weeks ahead depending on the season.

Here is how the pricing works, what the rules say, and how to plan the move.

What the Move Costs

Figures from moveBuddha’s Charlotte to Raleigh route data:

Home size Full-service movers Moving container Rental truck
Studio or 1 bedroom $819 to $3,268 $866 to $1,461 $213 to $355
2 to 3 bedrooms $1,322 to $3,795 $1,039 to $1,996 $209 to $393
4 or more bedrooms $1,737 to $4,864 $1,410 to $2,418 $265 to $479

Rental truck prices leave out fuel, equipment, insurance, and a day or more of your own labor. Container prices leave out loading and unloading.

What Moves the Price

  • Weight. The main factor on a distance move.
  • Access at both ends. Stairs, elevators, and long carries.
  • Packing. Full packing for a large home adds a day of work.
  • Date. Summer, weekends, and month-end cost more.
  • Specialty items. Pianos, safes, and hot tubs are priced separately.

How North Carolina Prices This Move

The Utilities Commission’s consumer moving guide sets the rules for moves within the state.

Rule What it means for you
36 miles or more Priced by weight and distance
Weighing Net weight from an empty weigh-in and a loaded weigh-in
No scale available A constructive weight of 7 pounds per cubic foot may be used
Written estimate Free on a Commission-approved form, if requested at least five business days ahead
Maximum Rate Tariff Sets the most a mover can charge; you can negotiate below it

The Three Estimate Types

Estimate What you pay
Non-binding Up to 110 percent at delivery, with any balance due within 30 days
Binding guaranteed The fixed price, plus any services you add
Binding not-to-exceed The actual charge or the estimate, whichever is lower

A binding not-to-exceed estimate is usually the best deal on a weight-based move. If the shipment weighs less than expected, you pay less. If it weighs more, you are protected.

Tip: Show the estimator everything, including the attic, garage, and storage unit. A binding estimate only covers what was on the inventory, and anything added on move day can change the price.

Coverage

Option Cost What it pays
Basic value protection Free 60 cents per pound
Full value protection 75 cents per $100 of declared value Up to the declared value

The minimum declared value for full value protection is $4 times the shipment weight. On an 8,000-pound shipment that is a $32,000 minimum value, costing $240. Basic coverage on the same shipment tops out at $4,800.

Items worth more than $100 per pound must be listed in writing. Your choice applies to the whole shipment and must be made before the move begins.

Claims

File as soon as possible and no later than nine months after delivery. Keep damaged items and packing materials until the claim is settled. Claims are not processed until the move is paid in full.

Containers or a Rental Truck Instead?

The table above shows that containers and rental trucks can cost much less than full service on this route. Whether they are cheaper in practice depends on your time and your belongings.

Option Good for Watch out for
Full-service movers Most households, larger homes, tight schedules The highest price, so get it in writing
Moving container Flexible timelines, people who want to load slowly You do the loading and unloading
Rental truck Small moves, people who can drive a large truck Fuel, insurance, your own labor, and two days of driving

A rental truck makes sense for a studio and a few friends. For a three-bedroom house with a piano, full service is usually worth the difference once your time and the risk of damage are counted.

Timing and Delivery

Most Charlotte to Raleigh moves take one to two days from pickup to delivery. Smaller homes can often be delivered the same day. Packing a two or three-bedroom home adds four to eight hours before the truck leaves.

The drive along I-85 and I-40 takes about two and a half to three hours. Traffic around Greensboro and Durham can add more.
